"Surviving the Holidays" by Cindy Galik

Well, so far I’ve survived the holiday office parties, Christmas parties, dinner parties, cocktail parties, Christmas cookies, cakes, chocolates, candy canes, fudge, carmel corn, fruit cakes, nuts, egg nog and you name it holiday treats.  Wherever I go on the Key people are shoving goodies and Christmas cheer at me.

Don’t get me wrong.  I love the holidays.  But, if this lasted more than another week something would have to give.  And I can’t afford the new wardrobe.

I can’t say my poor dog Spencer has fared as well.  He has actually lost weight.  I’ve dragged him out for extra walks around the Village trying to counteract the effects of the sugar high I have from all the sweets and partying.

There’s a lot happening the next few weeks, on and off the Key.  I can’t begin to list it all.  But, you won’t want to miss seeing Richy Kicklighter with Neil Larson at the Beach Club this week.  Twinkle will appear as a special guest Christmas night, which falls on a Friday.  Thank heavens, a three-day weekend.

Here is a true Christmas story.  Many of you know Joan Moore, the owner of Letter Perfect in the Village.  What you may not know is Joan suffered cardiac arrest the week before Thanksgiving.

Joan is 47, physically fit (although she did smoke) and very active.  She had no warning signs before this happened.  She says she is always the planner and didn’t fail to plan for this.  She “actually died” at the feet of two nurses and a policeman who had just completed a course on CPR.  If not for their care she might not be here today.

Joan says, “God got my attention with this.”  The good news is there is no permanent damage and she is on her way to a full recovery.  She is planning to reopen Letter Perfect sometime in February.  And she is making some needed lifestyle changes.

We wish Joan and her family the best and look forward to supporting her when she returns to work.

Don’t forget to take time to smell the orange blossoms.  It is so easy to get caught up in everything this time of year.  And before you know it, it will all be over.

Enjoy and have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.
